Adventures For Singles Newsletter
January 2010
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |
Dear Suzy,
Happy 2010. Stepping into the new decade, I decided not to make any
more resolutions. I will remain me, an extroverted introvert still
looking for my inner adult.
However in a travel business sense, I'm always growing because the world
is our playground with endless possibilities. We had an amazing 2009
with many wonderful new clients to augment our regular groups. Hundreds
enjoyed our trips to India, Jordan, Israel, Turkey, Greece, Poland,
Prague, Costa Rica, Bali, Austria, Germany, Tanzania, Kenya, Egypt and
Antarctica.
We always cover the globe east, west, north and south. Yet we consider
AFS to be a small "boutique travel company" that focuses on quality over
sheer profit quantity. We do not churn out 40 plus trips per year, nor
market large groups on Caribbean cruises. We could do this, but choose
instead to offer less than 12 creative trips per year to more exotic
locales. This style has worked for us these past 2 decades. We are
grateful now in January that nearly all our 2010 journeys are full!
That's why we decided not to do our annual print mailing to 7,400+
singles. When we save money, the savings get passed to you.
Still we do have openings that occur from cancellations. These happen
sometimes when work schedules change or once final payments are due.
White Hot - Suzy's Antarctica Journal
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Last month I lead 31 people to Antarctica. They simply loved it and
next year want us to sail the same ship to the North Pole to experience
the kingdom of the polar bears!
Suzy's Journal...
I had some apprehension about heading to the end of the earth, at the
bottom of the globe where the nail supports it, to a land covered in 98%
ice that has never supported any mammals or humans. Antarctica is the
driest highest, cleanest, windiest and coldest of all continents, so
cold even the polar bears stay away.

Suzy's Travel Babble
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Delta hiking fees again. The
cost of traveling rose heavily again this week. DL will charge $25 for
your first checked bag and $35 for a second. That's $50 to $120 more
per roundtrip added to the ticket cost! I know of no one who checks a
second bag now. Unfortunately this will force passengers to over stuff
carry-on bags. Next week UA, US Air
and AA will match the cost. You
can save $10 by pre-paying online. Elite frequent fliers will be
exempt. Southwest is the only
carrier with no bag fees.
Air France A380 - Air France
is heralding the new Airbus A380, the worlds largest aircraft
carrying 538 passengers from JFK to Paris. Despite its size, it's
now the most fuel efficient and environmentally sound aircraft of
all with the lowest CO2 emissions per passenger.
Will the Euro become the most hated
currency in 2010? from
Money & Markets
The dollar was the worlds whipping boy in 2009, but the tables could
turn with a surge in scrutiny over sovereign debt. Dubai defaulted,
but now the Euro-zone is escalating as the weakest link. Spain,
Greece, Italy, Ireland and Portugal are turning massive budget
deficits. These debt burdens could present a major threat to the
Euro's lifespan.
Airline luggage weight scales -
Dept. of Consumer Affairs did a 3 week sweep inspecting
luggage scales in New York's airports. Of JFK's 608 scales, 48 were
faulty, 9 of 123 were off at Laguardia. Weigh your bag at home on
your bathroom scale to get a good baseline. If the airport scale is
off by a couple of pounds, it could cost you $50 to $150 dollars.
If you suspect something is off, ask the agent to weigh on a
different scale.
Numbers - Tracking
Airfares: Elaborate Algorithms Predict Prices.
Wired magazine's article of
"flight patterns" showed 141,000 aircraft paths over a 24 hour
period. The fare data on ticket prices were even more vast with 175
billion fares originating from 79 airports.
What can you do? If prices seen high, hold off. The lowest price
tends to hit between 8 to 2 weeks before departure now. Buying in
advance doesn't save money. When you see a price drop to a tasty
fare, snatch it up.
New Aviation Security -
Airports may be adding full body scanners. Privacy advocates raise
concern about the use of these machines. I've been in them and had
no concern. The images can't be stored or transmitted. They are
now working to make the body image fuzzy or into a stick figure.
You can opt for a pat down instead.
New crazy rule suggested - (there's still no official word from
TSA.) No magazines, electronics or bathroom breaks for the last
hour of an international flight to the US. Hopefully this is either
a temporary measure, or the restrictions will be less severe once
the official policy becomes clearer.
