Adventures For Singles Newsletter
April 2009

Dear Suzy,
I'm sure you are all ready for spring to arrive. Terry and
I just returned from a polar cruise into the arctic circle
and are still thawing out. Read about it below. Our "Taj &
Tigers" India group of 35 just returned home with rave
reviews. Deborah did a great job as trip leader and the
local supplier went beyond the call to make them happy.

AFS Contest Winner
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thank you for participating in our free trip getaway. There
were only 78 entries, so for those that entered, the odds were
good. The winner was Craig Radelman from Florida. If Craig
can't go on either our Fertile Turtle Safari Costa Rica or the
fun Oktoberfest trip to Austria and Germany, then Jane Schulz is
the alternate. |
Travel Green
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A
recent study reveals that travelers are now practicing
energy conservation. On hotel stays, it is wise to request
that your sheets not be changed daily, re-use towels, turn
off lights and adjust thermostat when you leave the room.

AFS to Sponsor Kenya Orphanage
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From my first visit 20 years ago, Kenya stole my heart. For
years I've researched children's homes with the intent to choose
one to sponsor and visit often. To make a long touching story
short, I met with Bishop Thalanga from Nairobi who oversees 26
orphanages. I enquired which one was in the most need. It is
Kieni Home with just 34 abandoned children. Our October Kenya
group is scheduled to visit this place. I asked if they should
bring some school supplies. The Bishop responded, "They have
nothing Suzy, no shoes, no food." And so we will bring many
gifts to this remote orphanage with many children who have never
seen a white person. I'm so excited about this and some future
"voluntourism" trips to Kenya. We will video our visit for you
to view with much more information to come. |
Antarctica - Strict limits on tourism proposed
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Obama administration is proposing strict
limits on the size of cruise ships and the
number of passengers allowed to come ashore on
the White Continent. A conference in DC begins
today led by Hillary Clinton who will propose
amending the 50 years Antarctic Treaty to
mandate restrictions on tourism. What does this
mean? Will you be able to go later? Perhaps,
but expect the prices to skyrocket. If you ever
wanted to visit the "7th continent", now would
be the time to go.
AFS Antarctica in December has 4 spaces left.
It's a thrilling exploration voyage on the new
luxury ship MS Fram. From Buenos Aires, you'll
sail to the farthest reaches of the White
Continent. Features: onboard lectures by
renowned professors, biologists, geologist
and at least 6 landings in the new zodiac styled
Polar Circle Boats. Be one of the few to ever
step onto this continent. See glaciers, mile
long ice shelves, unique birds, whales, seals
and thousands of penguins.

Our Polar Site Inspection in Norway
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We just returned from what is called "the worlds most
beautiful voyage" up Norway's coast deep into the Arctic
Circle. Winter is a great time to sail the polar seas where
snow-clad mountains reflect the polar twilight. The entire
world turns into eerie shades of black and white
photographs. it's too peaceful for words.
We were on an expedition ship with Hurtigruten, the same
cruiseline our Antarctic group will sail this December.
Service was stellar and food gourmet with the freshest
Norwegian delicacies. We began with tours in Oslo, then a
flight up to the arctic capital of Tromso on the 70th
parallel. People here insist it's the best place to see the
Aurora Borealis. They were indeed impressive, but I insist
it's the most expensive place on earth. Terry and I hunted
the town for the cheapest dinner, which was a burger and
fries for $65, but the catsup was free.
The highlight was dogsledding at the Wildlife Center. With
300 huskies, it's the largest in Scandinavia. That night we
geared up in thermal suits and headlamps to go sledding. A
team of 14 eager dogs pulled us miles over the pristine
seaside valleys. We were engulfed in total silence when our
musher suddenly yelled, "Northern Lights!" And there above
us were the magical glory of green and yellow hues across
the shy. Afterwards we gathered by a fire inside a Sami
tent for steaming bowls of reindeer stew.
For the next 5 days we sailed past spectacular scenery that
was dotted with tiny hamlets of colorful wooden houses. I
saw no polar bears or walruses as hoped for, but the fjords
were awe-inspiring. It was an authentic voyage through
unique waters. I may arrange a summer cruise for a group to
experience the midnight sun.
