Greenback Losing It's Appeal
Dear Suzy,
Greetings in the spirit of adventure.  We just returned from a wonderful site inspection of Krakow Poland.  It certainly exceeded my expectations.  It reminded me of Prague before it was "discovered."  You can read all about it here http://www.adventuresforsingles.com/krakow_poland.htm  We plan on doing a future "Prague and Poland" which will be a blast!

kuaola June 3 "Australia & Fiji"  We have a perfect sized group of 34 with 3 spaces available.  $1549 land and $1099 air plus taxes is a great value for all this dual country vacation covers:  4 days in exotic Fiji at their newest beach resort, wildlife encounters in Melbourne and Phillips Island and fabulous tours of Sydney.

May 15 and May 23 "Arabian Nights- Dubai & Cairo"  Dubai is the hottest destination and now is the time to visit before land prices skyrocket.  This is the perfect combination tour of ultra chic Dubai and its modern marvels with ancient Cairo and its pyramids.  So popular we do two trips back to back.  I lead May 15 with 3 spaces open.  May 23 has 1 space.  Call now if interested.

I read well over a dozen travel publications each week and I am overloaded with good travel tips.  Here are a few of the better tips that may interest you.

-- On foreign purchases, watch your credit card bill for new currency conversion fees.  Visa and Mastercard now charge 1 to 3% extra!  Studies now show that Capital One absorbs 1% and charges no fees.

-- Most cell phones work globally but roaming charges can vary greatly depending on your carrier.  Be sure to call your provider to check your rate.  Never use your cell phone of a cruise ship.  Wait until you get on shore.  Roaming charges on ships can run as high as $5 to $10 per minute!

-- A new website designed by air traffic controllers helps you avoid delays.  www.avoiddelays.com.  (Bookmark if you fly a lot domestically.)  It lists tips and top airports that have the most delays:  Newark, JFK, Philadelphia, Wash Dulles, Atlanta, Chicago and more.  Good suggestions: Fly non-stop if possible, book morning departures to avoid weather delays, fly mid-week when traffic is lighter, monitor weather changes day of departure and sign up for airline email/text notifications.

-- On international flights, keep your window shade down when flying during daylight hours.  Flying in the upper atmosphere there is little to filter out the suns dangerous ultraviolet rays.

-- Lost bags.  The Association of European Airlines reported that British Airways has the highest rate of mishandled bags, 28 per 1000.  That's 75% higher than 16 per 1000 for 27 other carriers.

-- Good news, if an airline looses your bag in the USA, its max liability to you is a whopping $3000.  Bad news, if your bag is lost internationally including the US connecting portion, you only get a fraction at $450 per bag or $1500 per passenger depending on the country you happen to be in at that time, different exchange rates apply.  In addition to travelers insurance always check with your homeowners insurance policy and your credit card company you used to buy your air ticket, sometimes they can help augment your claim.  Insurance.

cash
A recent NY Times article stated that the dollar has depreciated 9 to 16% worldwide.  Be aware that many American tour operators are tacking on a new "currency surcharge" to tours, similar to the airlines fuel surcharges.  Group Voyagers, parent company to Globus and nine other large tour companies added a 5% surcharge to their 2008 trips.  They range $20 to $200.  This was after the tour packages were printed in brochures. Yet after court battles, the judge allowed them to increase prices.  USTOA (United States Tour Operators Assoc.)  said tours abroad could rise up to 15% higher which is a monstrous change to the industry.

At AFS, we have absorbed losses such as on our Swiss Alpine Rail Journey that departs next week.  The dollar fell to the Swiss Franc and we covered it for our clients booked.  We set trip prices a year ahead.  In the past we could hedge against a weakened currency conversion, but this may not always be the case in the future.  This year we will strive to honor all land prices set for each trip.  Our hope is the dollar will eventually stabilize.  Until then as prices rise, people may take fewer trips or shorter trips.  But history suggests that consumers don't like to give up their vacation plans.  What can you do?  If you've been thinking about joining us then book a trip this year, we can't predict what will happen next year.

Until next time,
